Why does cold weather use more fuel?

In the cold, your engine takes longer to warm up, winter tires and snow make the car work harder, and the heater and defroster use energy. Hybrids and electric cars are affected the most, because heating the cabin takes energy their motors would otherwise use. Tips to use less fuel in winter

      How it works

      1. Route – we find the driving distance between your start and destination using OpenStreetMap routing.
      2. Car – we look up your vehicle's official EPA combined MPG from FuelEconomy.gov.
      3. Fuel price – we look up today's pump prices at gas stations near your starting point for your car's fuel type. You can always edit the price.
      4. Cost – distance ÷ MPG × price per gallon, or distance × L/100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. Round trip doubles it.

      Frequently asked questions

      How accurate is the estimate?

EPA ratings are measured under standard conditions. Highway speed, AC use, cargo, tire pressure and traffic can change real-world economy by 10–20%. Use the MPG field to override if you know your own average.

Where do fuel prices come from?

Where available, we use today's posted prices at gas stations near your starting point. Otherwise we use national averages (for the US, from the Energy Information Administration via FuelEconomy.gov, updated weekly). Type in what your station charges for the most precise number.

Does it work in Canada and other countries?

Yes. Choose your country at the top of the form. In the United States we show miles, gallons, MPG and US dollars. In Canada and most other countries we show kilometres, litres, L/100 km and the local currency. You can still switch units yourself.

      Can I compare two cars?

Yes. Tap "Compare with another car" under your car, or below your estimate, and pick a second car. You'll see both costs side by side for the same trip, each using the price of its own fuel (for example premium, diesel or electricity), and how much you'd save with the cheaper one.

How does winter affect fuel cost?

Cold weather makes every car use more fuel. The engine takes longer to warm up, cold air and snow add resistance, winter tires roll less easily, and the heater and defroster use energy. According to FuelEconomy.gov, a gas car's fuel economy in city driving can be about 15% lower at −7 °C, hybrids about 30% lower, and electric cars can lose even more when the heater is on. Choose your "Driving conditions" to include this in your estimate.

      • Skip the long warm-up. Idle for no more than about 30 seconds, then drive gently. The engine warms up faster while driving.
      • Check tire pressure often. It drops as temperatures fall, and under-inflated tires use more fuel.
      • Clear snow and ice from the roof, hood and windows before you go. It adds weight and drag.
      • Use a block heater where available, on a timer about 2 hours before you leave. Natural Resources Canada says it can improve fuel economy by up to 10% at −20 °C.
Does it work for electric cars?

Yes. For EVs we use the EPA kWh-per-100-miles rating and the average residential electricity price.

      Is it free?

Yes, completely free. No sign-up required.
